Jane Fonda and Me, Working Out Together for Over 30 Years

Ever since I bought Jane Fonda’s Workout Book in 1982, Jane and I have been working out together.  Get those knees up, Diane, she would say, you have to feel the burn. Don’t be afraid to put some real effort into it.

Other people have bought her book, I’m sure, but may have found that doing push ups while turning the pages a bit difficult, so they likely gave up and went to a gym, or joined a walking group. But not me, oh no, I loved working out with her so much that I seriously strained a shoulder muscle once, twisting around to hold a page in place while I did a deep knee bend.

Later on, once she came out with her first video, Jane Fonda’s New Workout, we continued working out together, this time, to the rhythmic thumping of 1980s music—her group in their Hollywood studio, and I in my front room. I had an an ocean view at the time, and warmed up while watching the oil tankers ply the waters of the Georgia Straight. A little colder than California, I know, but what the heck.

Her book, selling 17 million copies, was a hit, but it was the VHS tape that really made an impact. When Jane Fonda released her video, gyms were populated by men primarily, and it was difficult for women to do a routine in public, without feeling they were on display. For millions of women, working out to a tape was a practical solution. Women found the upbeat music motivational, and Fonda’s visual example and breathless instructions easy to follow. It wasn’t only the workout, of course. I’m sure her followers were all hoping to become as slim and attractive as she was, which was hard to do without her fame, her fortune, and her genes. But what made the difference in our lives was something else—it was the promise of physical strength, something we could all reach for.

There’s no doubt that strength was the element that attracted me. To this day, I do her strength building exercise, adding weights, of course, which she encouraged in later tapes.

Whenever I see her now, doing a Ted talk, or being interviewed on a late night show, there she is, in perfect shape, telling people how simple it is. If she can do it, I can too, I always thought, and to some extent, I guess I have succeeded. She is an excellent teacher.

Recently, I saw her on the cover of Vogue, thanks to blogging friend Lynne Spreen, who sent me a link to the magazine. Janet Siroto reports on the Vogue piece in an April, 2019 article for the blog, Next Tribe, Viva Vogue: Wait Till You See Their Latest 81-Year-Old Cover “Girl”

Jane Fonda has lived long enough and remained healthy enough to be somewhat of an icon in the physical fitness world. That’s not surprising, given the head start she received as the daughter of famed actor Henry Fonda, and the subsequent success of her own movie career.  But lately, Jane is being acknowledged for something more in her mix of achievements—wisdom. In her article for Vogue, Siroto focused on her inspirational ideas about growing older. Here are a few of her quotes:

“I like being over the hill because I’ve discovered there’s a whole new landscape,”

“I’m fond of age. I’m glad I’ve lived this long.”

“It’s important to understand that older women are the fastest-growing demographic in the whole world. It’s time to recognize our value.”

Siroto reports that the reaction on social media has been very positive, and ends with this zinger:

“A wonderful reaction … but won’t it be nice when one day (soon hopefully) seeing women of Jane’s age will be a, wait for it, non-issue?”

It’s a long time coming, and don’t hold your breath, but it’s a start!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I gave my head a shake over that (another 30 years)! LOL. Thanks, tammy j for the sentiment!

  1. LOL I’m still trying to do the pose she does on the book cover, but somehow I always fall over. I do share her basic sentiment, though, that any day above ground’s a GOOD day.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Amy, no matter how hard I tried, in my prime, or out of it—I never managed the pose the way she did (and maybe still does)! And yes, today is a GOOD DAY!

  2. It’s true, she’s become a plain-spoken advocate for age. And the wisdom of considering the alternative…what are we crabbing about, she seems to say. We’re still vertical. Happy Easter, Diane.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I enjoyed the article you commented about, hence my use of your link on Twitter. Thanks, Lynne. I’m having a good Easter, and a great beginning to spring!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I’m afraid I parted with both the book and the video, all in the interests of ‘down-sizing’, which is something I started decades ago! (Not done yet!)

  3. I have two copies of the book — one at home and one at the cottage. Although I belong to a gym and workout there, Fonda’s book is one I won’t give up. More importantly, she has provided ongoing inspiration stay optimistic and hopeful regardless of years on the calendar.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

So true, Jeanette! She has inspired me in so many ways, not the least is her calm, intelligent attitude. What’s also nice is the fact that she has always ‘been there’ for women my age!

  4. Jane Fonda was probably one of the first individual’s to startup a health & wellness program for older people. It isn’t mentioned in this artificial but Jane has gone on to advocate for seniors primarily about the idea that ageing doesn’t need to be a downward journey into decrepitude. The Third age can be the best years of your life where ageing is like climbing a ‘spiral staircase’ one step at a time. It is about being empowered through lifelong learning and possibly achieving the level of self-actualization. If you want to achieve your highest potential you will need to focus on 3 things: health & wellness, courage to take a risk and learning something new every day.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I think she has all of your requirements covered! Especially the ‘taking a risk’ part, which, as you point out, she did when she created one of the first workout programs for women. Thanks, Joe!

  5. I go to an exercise class that is predominately women, and it amuses me to think of men being the largest part of any exercise class these days. I think she airbrushed out her knees in that cover picture. 🙂

    1. Still the Lucky Few

The video was made before PhotoShop, but yes, it does look like a bit of touching up was done! HAhaha. The YMCA is a popular gym for men, and I think they go in the same numbers as before, at least that has been my experience at my gym. My husband, for the first time ever, has started going to a class, wonder of all wonders!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Well, it’s genuine, you can be sure of that! As you may have noticed, I’m quite free with my criticism, so it’s only fair that I should be free with my praise LOL! Thanks, Barry, for your great comment.

  6. Hi, Diane – I believe that the Universe is sending me a message. I seldom watch television/Netflix, but did join a friend in watching an episode of Grace & Frankie last week. I rarely tune in to TedTalks…but this week another friend sent me a link to, you guessed it, an episode with Jane Fonda (2011). Today Jane appeared in your (very well-written) post. Now I just need to figure out what the Universe wants me to know (or do)! 🙂

    1. Still the Lucky Few

…and the Universe does work in mysterious ways! I missed Grace & Frankie, but hear that Jane Fonda was terrific in it. I’ll catch up with it someday on television re-runs (my usual source for viewing)! I think just continuing with your enlightened blog might be what you should be doing—you contribute to people’s lives so much doing that!

  7. Given my osteoporosis, I’m not so sure I should be doing the exercise in that picture. I just checked YouTube for some of her routines, and some look safe enough. One started with the warning,

Not all exercises are suited for everyone and this or any other exercise program may result in injury. Any user of the exercise program assumes the risk of injury resulting from performing the exercises.

She recommends talking to a doctor first, of course, as if they know anything either! But the warning is a good one.

I’ve been going to the local family YMCA for over 20 years and also exercise at home, so I’m a true believer, and I’m for anyone encouraging people to exercise and develop other healthy habits. So good for you, Diane!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I’ve noted that you are very health-conscious, without going overboard, and you’ve mentioned in your blog that you keep fit. And I chuckled when you mentioned just how much doctors know about fitness, which is, I agree, not very much! Thanks, Jean, and Happy Easter.

  8. I get totally exhausted just looking at the cover; so I think it best I give that book a miss, although I must admit I did fancy Miss Fonda when I was a bit younger, about 50 years bit.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Jane Fonda is a beautiful woman to this day, and I’m sure most men would have found that cover appealing. So you had lots of company, Bear! Thanks for your perspective on this, even though it didn’t inspire you to reach for your credit card and order the book!LOL

      1. Doesn’t normally take me long to reach for a card, much to the War office’s disgust.
Must agree about Miss Fonda, but it’s marvellous what a nice bank balance can acheive.
Her Dear Ol’ Daddy was always a favourite of mine. They don’t turn out actors like the Fonda’s anymore, Mores the pity.

  9. Your blog brought back so many memories. My children were small when Jane Fonda came out with her workout tapes. Who had time or money to go to the gym? So, like you, she inspired me to keep fit during those years and I loved doing the workouts. Also love the quotes you included. We must all change our attitude about aging!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Your last sentence underlines the main point in all of this. Our mothers and grandmothers didn’t have the time or resources to do the fitness work we are doing. It’s wonderful that we can participate in these changes as we age! Thanks, Julie!

  10. My wife was a great fan of Jane Fonda. However she decided to stick to the local yoga classes as Jane’s workouts were too much for her, and the anti-aircraft gun took up too much space in the garden. … 😉

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I howled when I read this, John! And there would be banners, flags and posters too, no doubt.

  11. What fun to read about your “friendship” with Jane Fonda over the years. The fact that she made exercising fun and affordable and easy for women to follow at home makes her the icon she deserves to be. And yes, she is aging gracefully and with poise and energy. A good role model. Woman are FINALLY slowly being seen as important ‘beings,’ no matter their age.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I agree with the points you make about the evolving role of women—so welcome to have that happening at last!

  12. Working out with Jane Fonda for 30 years! That’s dedication. I’ve not spent three minutes with Jane Fonda; iat’s not my style.
I prefer walking and exercise with small groups, it’s more social. As for being over the hill – I once bought a T-shirt that said ‘ Over the Hill. What hill? Where? I don’t remember any hill?’
The laugh is, I bought it when I was 50+; when I look back now, I realise I was clueless about the true meaning of the word hill!
    Alphie

  13. Hi Diane, A wonderful post! I really like Jane Fonda, especially now. She is a wonderful example of getting even better with time, despite health and personal challenges. I have also seen her Ted talks and listened to her podcast interviews. I agree with you on the word “icon” and “wisdom.” I am glad I found your blog site:) Erica

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Welcome, Erica! I remember that you may be an ‘island-dweller’ like me. Interesting, isn’t it, the way blogging brings people together! Underneath it all, I think, is a genuine enjoyment of writing, which all bloggers share.
