New to Online Shopping? Eight Steps to Make it As Easy As Pie!

My Christmas gift shopping this year, began with a funny story. This year, like every year, I started to think about Christmas shopping early—mid-November, to be exact. It’s not that I love shopping so much—it’s quite the opposite—for me it’s  a chore! But family traditions demand I participate, so I do.

Like every other year, as I started to write my list, I began to talk about online shopping. But I always leave it too late, and that’s what it becomes—just talk. After several years of listening to me go on and on about where I’ll do my online shopping, and when I’ll finally start to order, Bob decided to take some action.

“Look at these sweaters,” he called out from the study, ” A mock neck sweater, you’re always saying you want to buy one for me. How about I order one, and you’ll be able to cross me off your list.”

“Sure” I said, coming to look over his shoulder. “It looks nice, and the price is right. Order it!”

It came eight days later in a plastic bag with a self-closing zipper in a small box. Too small, as it turned out. As I lifted it out of its packaging, I knew it wouldn’t fit. Later, it was worth a laugh, when Bob looked at it, and without saying a word, handed it over to me. Bob is over six feet tall, and a size large. I am five feet one inch, and petite. It fit me perfectly.

“Merry Christmas,” he said, “That’s my Christmas shopping done!”

But seriously, I am going to do at least some of my shopping online this year. After all, I reassure myself, it can’t be much different than the catalogue shopping our parents did years ago!

While some of you have been shopping online for years, others, like me, may have tried it, and given up, not knowing where to start. But as I revisit it this year, I can see that the process is streamlined—websites are easier to navigate, guiding the buyer through the search to the shopping cart, and through to the final click with barely any effort at all.

So if you’ve tried it, and have been successful, good for you! But if you haven’t had much luck, here are some suggestions that might make it easier:

Your first foray should be just for fun

-Your first step is deciding what to buy. Choose something familiar to you, with a price range you know, so you can recognize a good deal. I decided I would buy a dress for the holidays, in petite.

-Your next step is a search. I typed “petite holiday dresses” into the Google search window. Another window popped up, displaying a number of sites.

-From here you might see windows asking you to choose your price range, and provide details such as size and color. Since you are only window shopping at this point, choose price, and explore what is offered.

-bookmark this page to a folder you have marked “Online shopping 2018” and go back to do some serious shopping!

Deciding where to buy:

-To avoid the risk of choosing a scam site*, think of a physical store you know and go directly to their site. I chose HBC, I trust their quality, and know their prices.

-Or choose an established company you know by reputation, typing the name of the store after the product name: (e.g.: petite holiday dresses, Reitmans). Most major chains have parallel websites now, which offer online sales. These retailers should be reliable.

*Some scams will pretend to be big box stores, so check the domain names to ensure that it is the correct website, and a real store. Fake websites will also replace a “.com” with a “.net”. Also check that the URL is preceded by a padlock symbol followed by HTTPS. (if this is missing, choose another website).

Check the return policy

It’s always possible that the article may not fit, may be the wrong texture or color, and you may have to return it. A return policy should be clearly stated and easily found on a website. Here is one I like:

“Within 30 days of purchase, you are welcome to return your unworn, unwashed, unaltered item(s) with the price ticket(s) still attached, to receive a full refund. Purchases from reitmans.com can be returned in person to any Reitmans location or by mailing the purchase back to us.”

If you are shopping on a site that has a physical store in your town, your best option is to return it there. If not, check to see that the site has free shipping for returns. If there is no provision for returns, and you may have to pay shipping to return something, don’t shop there.

Check product reviews (as in Amazon)

Not all sites have this feature, but if they do, take the time to read through what other people think—it’s invaluable. Although reviews are subjective, they do give you feedback about the shopping experience. Come to think of it,  it’s no different than reading online reviews for a hotel.

Be scrupulous about measurements

When shopping for clothing, you must be accurate about your measurements. It’s not easy to measure yourself, so ask a friend to help. If you prefer to do it yourself, for a truly excellent guide, watch this Youtube video by BlueprintDIY.

Once you have your accurate measurements, consult the measurement chart carefully. Until you become more experienced, avoid sites where sizes are unrecognizable, especially overseas. If you want to be even safer, stick to stores where you have shopped before, and are familiar with their sizing—their online sizing will be the same.

Spend a few minutes analyzing the piece you want to buy—look at the garment in relation to your body. If your arms are short and you tend to need most sleeves adjusted, a ¾-length sleeves would work best. If clothes you try on always fit badly from your shoulder to waist, consider buying only petite sizes.

If you are unsure whether you should order bigger or not, remember that it is much easier to have items altered to be smaller. For a truly good fit, you may have to take the item to a tailor—many of us really need to have items altered to make them fit us perfectly It’s important to give measuring lots of attention. It’s a great feeling to buy something, and find it fits perfectly right out of the box. All it takes is a little planning and foresight to get there.

Allow for color disparity

You can never be sure about the color until the item is in your home. (This is another reason you need to know the return policy.) Never rely on a described color—if an item comes in different colors, be sure to consult color chips instead.  And if they aren’t offered, go elsewhere. When you get the item, if the color isn’t right for your skin tone, or doesn’t work with the rest of your wardrobe, then back it goes.

How to pay

There are three types of payment: credit cards, debit cards, and third party payment services, like PayPal, which allow you to make purchases without sharing as much financial information with each retailer. Credit cards and third party payment services are the safer options, though debit cards are generally cheaper.

Lastly, always print out the confirmation email for future reference.

Go for free shipping

Many sites will have free shipping if you purchase a certain dollar amount. This can be frustrating if you only wanted one item which doesn’t reach that amount.

You could reach the required amount by purchasing a couple of gifts for other people, or buy essentials you can always use, like undies. I hate paying shipping, so I do whatever I can to avoid it.

Please give us feedback

  1. “Merry Christmas,” he said, “That’s my Christmas shopping done!”
LOL!!! I love this story! I’m also 5’1″. used to be Five Foot Two Eyes of Blue. eyes stayed blue but I’ve lost an inch.
thank you for this wonderful post that the ‘rest of us’ need! I’ve never purchased anything to wear from the internet. my late sister in law always did and never had any problems. I just couldn’t do it.
I hate returning things! even in a store much less through the mail.
I used to shop when the boys in our family (the Marine’s two grandchildren) were little. because they loved opening presents. but now one is in college and the other just started high school this year. since they’ve been teens I just give them each a nice cash gift in a pretty little box. and along with it a box of their favorite ‘goodies!’ … chocolates or cookies or whatever. it goes over well! and their lazy minimalist Auntie Tam is as lazy and happy as ever! the family finally realizes I don’t like STUFF! I’m happy with something to eat that I wouldn’t normally buy myself. and the Marine’s daughter in law Reve’ always gives me the latest Stephanie Plum novel! I love reading it and then I donate it to my library! it’s all good. (the older “kids” … M/Sgt Mike and Reve’ are given the same as the boys.) but if I DO ever… or am finally FORCED INTO IT! … I’m keeping your post for reference! xoxo thank you!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

I’m feeling an animosity to ‘stuff’ as well. Every time I wrap a gift, or watch people tear open a package on Christmas morning, I look balefully at the pile of not very useful merchandise that will most likely find it’s way into the landfill! I’ve felt this way for a long time, and have taken some measures to reduce my participation. But for now, I’m buying some gifts, so online shopping, here I come!

  2. Another wonderful post!!

I’ve been an online shopper for several years now. My only ‘brick and mortar’ shopping is ‘window’ and rare.

The warnings you post are excellent. A close review of the URL is so important, more now than ever and I’m afraid it will only get worse. One of my favorite on-line perks is Bill to Ship to. It saves me not only a trip to the store but mailing my gifts as well. Most of this shopping is during the year when gift wrap is not needed. But I’ve been known to send a card early during the Holidays asking the parent (or person) to be on the lookout for a gift in the mail. Our grandchildren are on both coasts of the U.S. and it’s wonderful to be able to remember them at anytime with a gift that takes so little effort on my part but gives us a YAY in return. Another great thing is online tracking!

I have a little list of things I used to pooh pooh that I now have come to expect and even appreciate.
The first was replacing individual cards with a letter sent to everyone.
    The second was answering machines.
The third is online Christmas Wish lists.

Online shopping has become so popular that, as you know, years ago Cyber Monday was added to Black Friday.

The discussion of STUFF is another matter and you write about that too.

    1. Congratulations on being an experienced shopper! You have offered a wealth of information here, which I know our readers will appreciate! Online Christmas wish lists are new to me, but worth exploring, which I’ll do later. In some ways, our lives are getting a little easier, don’t you think?

      1. I do feel it’s getting a bit easier. Other than our family living in the SF area breathing as become easier for the rest of us.

I find that embracing new technology provides time and freedom to work on holding fast to bedrocks such as a Free Press and sharing the Holiday spirit.

        1. Still the Lucky Few

Great outlook on new technology! Not everyone feels that way though, Alexandra—I find I use up a lot of time just keeping up to all of the new developments. But yes, once you master something, you do have more time to indulge in the time-tested benefits of past years!

  3. hi, Diane – you’ve listed many great tips here —- as well as awesome anecdotes! I previously lived in Beijing for 14 years, while most of my family members were in Canada. Online shopping was a life-saver at that time. In the past couple of years, family requests were for gifts of presence over presents. That has made gift giving even more creative but it has been very fun!

    1. I try to take the ‘presence over presents’ approach wherever it works. Ours is a blended family of independent adults, so we try to accommodate all Christmas wishes! With relatives in Canada, I’m sure you are familiar with our country and culture!

  4. I was kind of surprised by your post. There isn’t anyone I know who hasn’t shopped online. But clearly there are people who are new to it. So thank you for leading them through the steps. I was pleased to see that you covered the issue of the URL being the right one. I have been tempted by spam in my email to click on a message that claims to be from a store that I shop at. But if you look at the return address carefully, you’ll see that it is NOT Amazon, NOT Macy’s, NOT Walmart, but some crook who is trying to fool me and many other people.

Great job of addressing this issue!

    1. I’m definitely a Newby, although I’ve shopped online for books and supplements. Clothing and gifts are another matter, with details like sizing and color to consider. Writing this was a learning experience for me, and now I’m a believer!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Thanks for the tips, Bethany! We can all benefit from other peoples’ experience! I haven’t tried Etsy, but by all of my books from Amazon.

  5. Christmas 2017 was my first foray into the online shopping mode. It worked well. Everything arrived within described time limits including some art books from the UK. I’m hooked!
As the 2018 holiday rush has already begun, I’ll do the shopping online again this year. Your tips are appreciated.
I would add one safeguard — use a credit card with a low limit for online purchases. I keep my regular credit card for instore purchases and use another card when shopping online.
Thanks for excellent and encouraging information for those of us who are relatively new to the online world!

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Hello Greytop, and welcome to my blog! Good suggestion—using two credit card helps keeps the process organized. I’m doing most of my shopping online as well, and so far, everything has arrived on time, so I’ll be done early!

  6. We’ve been buying most of our clothes online for years now. It helps that we wear the same kind of clothes almost every day, so once we find something we like we buy enough to last us a while. It saves a lot of time!

One of our favorite stories is many years ago we were in Sam’s Club in Santa Fe and a fellow Andy used to work with said hi. He started with, “I looked and thought, ‘Oh, I recognize those clothes. Then I looked up and and thought, ‘I recognize that face, too!’ ” It does simplify things. 😀

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Hahaha! Easy to find each other in a crowd, too! I have ordered books and supplements online for years, but always hesitated when it came to clothing, because of sizing. But it looks like sites have streamlined that aspect, now including better charts and suggestions about how to measure. So I’ve ordered tights for me, and sweaters for gifts—hope it works out!

  7. I have been shopping online, mostly for books and kindle downloads, ever since Amazon came to India a few years ago. I am happy to say that I have not yet had to return anything though my son has had to on a couple of occasions, primarily shoes of wrong size. I also shop from other online stores for foodstuff not locally available and here too my experience has been quite satisfactory. I have not bought any clothes or footwear online but, who knows?

    http://www.rummuser.com/shoppingshopping-online/

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Your son is brave to order shoes—but I guess it’s okay if you are a standard size, with no foot issues. I’m the sort of shopper who spends hours looking and trying on shoes, so it would never work for me! Good idea to order foodstuffs not readily available in your area. When I lived in England briefly, I liked some products I could never find in Canada, but now I’ll Google them, and possibly place an order!

      1. I can’t find shoes that fit in regular shoe stores, so I have to buy online. I go to sites that offer free returns and when I find a style that works I buy an extra pair for the future.

        1. Still the Lucky Few

That’s what I would call ‘insurance’! Buying shoes is such a challenge for me, that I can’t imagine buying them online!

  8. I’ve never enjoyed shopping for clothes or shoes from a catalog or online. That said, I have done both but on a limited basis and with only a few select businesses. I’ve never returned anything though if displeased, the degree was not so great I wanted to have that hassle. The only shoes I ordered were a brand, size and style/last identical to a pair I already had and liked that I had fitted in a store when visiting my daughter on the opposite coast.

I always appreciate tips from others and often find a nugget or two as I have here, so thank you.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Returning things is definitely a hassle we don’t need—it’s hard enough to do it in physical stores. I’m appreciating the tips you readers have given me in response to my article. Thanks!

  9. Using a legitimate website, reading product reviews and knowing the return policy are key to having a satisfactory on-line shopping experience. Everything you offered is good advice for anyone new to on-line shopping and a good reminder to those of us who are regulars. I would add that having a printable return label (sometimes it is included in the box) is also a great advantage for those pesky returns – I am prone to ordering two of the same dress or shoes when I don’t trust the fit. It is easy to affix the label and drop the return at the UPS store just 3 miles away from home.

    1. Still the Lucky Few

Good suggestion about the returns—it’s a thorny issue for me—I just don’t want to spend the time doing it! But you made it sound easy! Thanks for this, Suzanne.
